Suicide rate prompts Tribes to declare state of emergency
The Cowichan Tribes are calling it a state of emergency.
According to a press release from May 10, the declaration is in response to an increase in suicides and suicide-attempts in the last few months.
In April, the Tribes held a “Circle of Light" forum to explore the reasons behind a spate of cases in the Cowichan Valley.
At least four people in the community took their lives before April this year. It's not clear if there have been more cases since then.
Chief Harvey Alphonse is scheduled to make a statement on Monday to give details on why they’ve called a state of emergency.
