NewsMalahat improvement plan coming Thursday
Some of you will say it's about time, when an announcement is made Thursday on enhancing safety on the accident-prone corridor, the Malahat. B.C.'s Minister of Transportation, Blair Lekstrom, is scheduled to make the announcement at the Legislature, but there are no hints yet as to what may be included. Some are calling for a concrete median all the way down the corridor. Others, including Cst. Robert Figueiredo with the Integrated Road Safety Unit, say the stretch of highway needs beefed up patrols. “We saw a need for more of a structured enforcement plan, perhaps dedicating a few more members to work on the Malahat on a consistent basis. Either that or perhaps even creating a Malahat road safety unit, to have consistent presence on the Malahat.” The group of police agencies released the report "Making the Malahat Safer" in January and pointed out that aggressive drivers, tailgaters and speeders are the main culprits in prompting others to speed along the 24-km corridor. Lekstrom is set to announce the government's ideas on enhancing safety on the Malahat at 12 p.m. Thursday. Similar StoriesMost Viewed Stories
