People from dozens of countries are expected to gather Wednesday in downtown Duncan to celebrate Canadian Multiculturalism Day.

Festivities include food, dancing, arts and music, organized by the Cowichan Intercultural Society. Jackie Martin, an English program coordinator, said the day has important significance.

“It gives people the opportunity to meet in a very friendly and casual setting. They get to know each other a little bit better and I think when people know each other better, then it helps to avoid some of the misunderstands that happen between cultures.”

She said food from Vietnam, China, England, Africa, and Iraq will be available, as well as dancing by Latin American groups.

The budget for Canadian Multiculturalism Day, which Martin said is a few thousand dollars, comes from Heritage Canada and Welcome BC.

 Festivities are being held from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Charles Hoey Park in Duncan.
