NewsCasseroles come to Cowichan
A group of protestors makes its way from Vancouver Island University to downtown Duncan with pots and pans every Wednesday evening. The 'casserole' protest, started by Montreal students, has spread to Cowichan. One organizer, Jane Kilthei, said the demonstration June 27 was to support the Cowichan Valley school board in its deficit budget—a move deemed illegal by the Ministry of Education. “I voted for this school board and I really support them in having conversations with the community and with parents about what services are essential to education here,” said Kilthei. “And they have been cut back, year after year after year.” She said the government’s behaviour is disconcerting when it comes to the democratic process. “There’s no discussion, they’re just told ‘come back with a budget’. The minister of Education won’t have a conversation with them about the needs in the community.” Kilthei said the first Cowichan Casserole protest drew about 60 people, and last week, 20 came out in the rain.
