NewsMinistry fires Cowichan Valley school board
Trustees of Cowichan Valley School District 79 have been fired. B.C.'s Education Ministry announced Sunday that members on the Board of Education “cease to hold office” because they neglected to present a balanced budget by June 30, as required by the School Act. Education Minister George Abbott has appointed the superintendent of the Surrey School District, Mike McKay, as the trustee for the Cowichan Valley District. Abbott said McKay will do the job of the board and work with District 79 staff to balance the budget for the year. Five of four trustees on the Cowichan Valley school board voted in favour of sticking to its $3.8 million shortfall in protest of cuts to education. The Ministry said 59 of 60 school boards in B.C. presented balanced budgets. Similar StoriesMost Viewed Stories
