The Cowichan Valley Regional District is still waiting for the B.C. government to act on a promise that it would start monitoring loads of soil being dumped in South Cowichan.

The area director for Shawnigan Lake, Bruce Fraser, said the Environment Minister has pledged to do spot checks on trucks coming over the Malahat.

“The sort of illegal and informal ones that are happening without sufficient scrutiny. The CVRD has been fighting that battle probably for a decade and we finally got some traction with the current minister.”

But so far, Fraser said it's been words only.

“We’re very anxious that action is going to take place as soon as possible, and we’re pressing for that.”

Fraser said the CVRD board members planned to explore that issue at a meeting July 12 at the Kerry Park Arena. The main of discussion of the meeting, though, was intended to be around South Island Aggregates’ application to dispose of contaminated soil on Stebbings Rd.

Officials from the Environment Ministry, the Ministry of Energy and Mines and from SIA were scheduled to attend to answer questions from the public.

A previous open house in June, hosted by SIA, drew some 300 participants.
