NewsSafety a priority at Crofton Mill
The death of two men and injury to several others at a mill in northern B.C. are prompting some to wonder how safe the province's paper mills are, including those in Cowichan. The general manager of the Crofton Pulp and Paper Mill, Rob Belanger, said they will be watching to see what kind of safety lessons can be learned from the Burns Lake fire. He said the mill has a multi-level safety program that has been in place for a while, using outside sources to make sure their employees are safe and satisfied with working conditions. “We have a joint health and safety group with our hourly folks and union leaders to make that we’re all working cooperatively and identifying and risks in the mill and addressing then quickly and a focus here may our WorkSafeBC, we work closely with them and they periodically visit to provide advice and if they see anything of concern we obviously address that very quickly.” Belanger said there is also a regular schedule to have machines checked to make sure they're clean and running safely. Authorities are still investigating the explosion at the Burns Lake mill, but a WorkSafeBC report found unacceptably high dust levels in the basement cleanup area.
