A man from Nanaimo is dead after an accident on the Cameron River near Port Alberni Tuesday night.

Two friends were kayaking on the river, when one, a 26-year-old, ran into trouble, and tipped his kayak.

He apparently got pinned under a log and couldn't get loose.

His friend, also from Nanaimo, found him and tried resuscitating him but was unsuccessful.

The RCMP said the surviving kayaker had to hike out several kilometres before getting cell reception to make an emergency call. He called 911 and the RCMP in Port Alberni responded, along with the Cherry Creek Fire Dept and the BC Coroner's Service.

They say both men were experienced kayakers.
