NewsWalk raises flag on ovarian cancer
It took them six and half hours to walk from Saywell Park in Lake Cowichan to the Duncan Fire Hall but they did it with a spirit of support and defiance with ‘cancer is stupid’ written on the backs of their shirts. Twelve women did the walk on July 21 to raise money for their friend, Cindy, who’s been diagnosed with an advanced stage of ovarian cancer. Jill Thomas helped organize the walk and said the news that Cindy had the disease seemed to come from out of the blue. Nicknamed the ‘silent killer’, ovarian cancer is difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are vague and generic. “You just have basic little symptoms. You get as stomach ache, indigestion, a little heartburn, you think you’re allergic to foods and different things like that,” Thomas explained. “So she had been having symptoms for almost a year of just little things and bam, they just found it.” About 100 people gathered at the Duncan Fire Hall after the walk, where they had raffle prizes and food. Thomas said they raised about $5,000 for Cindy. Similar StoriesMost Viewed Stories
