NewsLadysmith gets national green thumbs up
A Cowichan Valley city, working on decreasing its carbon footprint, got the top nod from the Globe and Mail. The City of Ladysmith is named ‘The Greenest Employer in Canada,’ according to the national list. Mayor Rob Hutchins told SunFM News that this honour came from a recent change in gardening around the town. “What captured the imagination, I believe of the editors, was the fact that three years ago our town staff replaced the incredible flowerbeds in front of city hall and other locations of town and started growing vegetables.” Since 2009, the vegetables have been harvested and given to the local food bank. Ladysmith was also the first town in Western Canada to start an organics roadside pickup, starting in North Cowichan May 1st. Mediacorp Canada launched Canada's Greenest Employer competition in 2007, to recognize organizations leading the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness.
