If you went camping this past weekend, hopefully you weren't one of those who left their fires unattended.

According to Coastal Fire Information Officer Donna MacPherson they found a lot of fires left behind over the weekend.

MacPherson told SunFm News that after all the warnings it is not good to see.

“We are a little disappointed that we found as many abandoned campfires as we did, we found over 50 of them. And that is troubling, even though it has been cold and wet on the weekend, we are asking that people be very careful when they get out into the forests, and make sure that they put their campfires out completely when they leave.”

She said that includes turning it over several times and ensuring that before you leave, the ground is cool to the touch.

MacPherson is also reminding the public, especially in the midst of forest fires around Canada that you are responsible for your fire and any damage it causes.

She said there is a common misunderstanding that when it is rainy and wet out, it is safe to leave your fire alone. When in fact she said many campsites are under forest canopies and are very dry, so despite the wet weather, forest fires are always a concern.

And it is not just in B.C., forest fires are a concern all over the country right now. A large one in Northern Ontario has had over 450 people evacuated Wednesday. Forest fighting services from B.C. are on the way there to offer their assistance.
