North Cowichan council will talk about beefing up the policing part of their budget today to match salary increases included in the new provincial RCMP contract.

Although an increase in on the table, Mayor Jon Lefebure ensures it will not require any extra money.

“It is not going to cause us any problem with this year’s financial plan because we have already passed a quarter in which we came under budget for policing, so it is not going to cost us anymore increase this year.”

Lefebure said the Duncan/North Cowichan RCMP detachment commander had requested approximately $70,000 more for this year, leaving the total RCMP expenditure cap at about $4,720,000.

Next year, North Cowichan will have to take into account the salary of another officer joining the team, but Lefebure said that will be a concern for 2013's budget.
