Chemainiacs are not giving up their fight over the location of a new library.

The president of the Chemainus Chamber of Commerce, the president of the Chemainus Museum, the Chemainus Seniors' Association, and Graham Bruce, appealed to North Cowichan council this week to reconsider its decision to put the library on the parking lot at Waterwheel Park.

Bruce argued that putting the library there will take away an important community space.

“The community square parking lot, as we like to call it, provides the alternatives to present parking for the tourists, parking for the local community, and the opportunity for these various community events to be put on, that brings life and vitality to a downtown core.”

He added the council needs to reevaluate the importance of the parking lot space and be more informed before they make a final decision.

“I think it would be fair to say that they may not fully understand or appreciate the significance of that parking lot and the impact that it has to the sustainability and vitality of the community and the business core.”

Bruce thinks the old fire hall location is a better place to put the library. He argued that if the building were tore down, it could also accommodate the visitors' centre, the chamber of commerce, and the food bank.

Bruce urged council to consider a parking and traffic analysis and a cost estimate of erecting the library at the old fire hall.

North Cowichan Mayor Jon Lefebure told SunFM News, council was impressed with the presentation and will conduct a parking and traffic analysis over the summer, as requested. But, he did make clear that it is unlikely their decision on the waterwheel parking lot will be changed at this point.
