Some 3,000 people in North Cowichan were without lights and power for a few hours on Saturday morning.

A pole fire in the Mt. Prevost area caused the outage, according to BC Hydro. Spokesperson Ted Olynyk said the outage should have affected only about 1,500 customers, but the nature of the repairs extended beyond the usual.

“We had to take another circuit out as well to make the repairs because they were adjoining circuits, so it was two circuits that went out.”

Olynyk didn’t know what caused the fire, but said BC Hydro would be looking into it.

“Pole fires can be caused by a number of reasons, just simple equipment failure or heavy use.”

Power was restored to most places between 1:30 and 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
