There may be a petition circulating Chemainus opposing a new library going up at the Waterwheel Park, but it’s unlikely that plan will change anytime soon.

North Cowichan council approved the location in the spring, and Mayor Jon Lefebure says part of that decision is based on the Chemainus Advisory Committee.

“Part of their role is to deliver community opinion to use, to North Cowichan council. At their last meeting, they endorsed the current parking lot site.”

“The site in the parking lot was a cleaner site,” he said.  “It enabled the project to move ahead more easily, it suited VIRL (Vancouver Island Regional Library) in that it was going to be a single-story, single-use building.”

Lefebure said because of this, the library design would be straightforward and simple, and it could be built sooner.

Other groups in Chemainus, including the Chamber of Commerce are asking North Cowichan council to consider including the library in a multipurpose building where the old fire hall is now.

While the petition is placed at spots around Chemainus, plans are unlikely to change until the Vancouver Island Regional Library holds a meeting in October to discuss what residents want from their new library.
