100-year-old fir in Waterwheel Park comes down
A grand fir near the entrance of Waterwheel Park in Chemainus is scheduled to come down Tuesday morning.
North Cowichan's director of Parks and Recreation Ernie Mansueti told SunFM News the old and magnificent tree needs to come down for safety reasons.
“We’ve had an arborist evaluating it for some time, it is in poor condition. It actually has high level of root rot in two of the four roots, which really becomes a safety issue for us.”
Mansueti said it is a shame such a big tree must come down.
“It is always disappointing when you get this type of news, especially in that park. They are beautiful trees, certainly something we don’t want to do, but in this case it is one we have to deal with and will."
They hope to keep a stem about 20 feet high for wildlife to still use, and during the winter, lights to be hung on it at Christmas.
