The organizers of a Ladysmith back to school fundraiser are thanking members of the community for helping them surpass their goal.

Volunteers spent August collecting donations for their "stock the lockers" campaign, to help buy school supplies for kids in need.

Organizer Mimi Zuyderduyn says they are thrilled with the nearly $6,000 raised.

“We’re just really encouraged by the support and not surprised because there are a lot of caring and sharing people who are very generous, especially towards the students because these kids are our future.”

Zuyderduyn said the money will be used to purchase things like winter jackets, and reading glasses, and whatever else kids might need to ensure they have a chance to succeed.

She delivered the money to the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Schools Foundation on Wednesday afternoon.

The foundation will now make sure it goes back to Ladysmith schools, who will distribute it to students who need the extra help.

The initial goal for the month long campaign was to raise $4000.
