Did you know that the Cowichan Valley wants to host the BC Summer Games?

Well The Cowichan Valley Regional District and North Cowichan want to host the 2016 or 2018 games right in our backyard.

North Cowichan Councillor Jennifer Woike told SunFM News that the games would be a great thing for the Valley

“There are some important benefits of hosting the games, other than the economic spin offs. Hosting can bring a community together; these games capture a whole cross section of the community.”

She continued that the games can bring the Valley together.

“Sport builds character in our youth, and brings people together in a positive environment, whether as competitors, spectators, or organizers.”

The economic impact is an important benefit according to Woike. She said in the four days it is estimated that we could bring $2.6 million to the Valley.

But, they are not sure if the community supports the idea so they are having another input session Thursday May 31. at 6:30 p.m. at the Island Savings Center in Duncan.

Woike also said that volunteers are the biggest and most important part. She knows they will need about 2,800 volunteers, but she believes with the Cowichan Valley’s stellar record in hosting past events, the volunteers will come out.

The Valley has successfully hosted several big events, including the 1991 B.C. Winter Games, the 2005 B.C. Seniors Games and the 2008 North American Indigenous Games.

If the community support is behind the BC Summer Games coming here, the CVRD will send in their bid September.
