Chemainus will walk to a different beat on Friday evenings starting June 22 when local business owners and artisans host the first Art Beat.

Local entrepreneur, Phil Mavis, describes the event as an interactive art walk and street festival.

“All of the artists will be present and most of them will be demonstrating or interacting with our guests.”

Mavis said some 12 artists will be featured at the inaugural Art Beat, including artists with acrylics on canvas, children’s paintings, rug hooking, photography and Chemainus’ original mural artists.

Artists featured at Art Beat may be different each week and Mavis explained that to qualify, artists must create original works and be from Vancouver Island.

“Sometimes when I just see art hanging on a wall with a price tag, there’s no meaning for it," he said, explaining the benefits of the interactive approach to the street festival.

“When you have that interaction with the artist, maybe somebody is interested in why they chose certain colours, then it becomes meaningful for them.”

Willow St. will be closed to traffic between Mill and Victoria Streets starting at 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 pm.
