If you're upset about one company’s proposal to dump contaminated soil in the Shawnigan Lake area, you'll have another chance to air your gripes at an upcoming public forum.

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is holding a meeting to discuss South Island Aggregates’s application to dispose of dirt at its quarry on Stebbings Rd.

The meeting will follow one held in early June, which drew some 300 residents who expressed concern that the contaminated soil would affect the South Shawnigan watershed.

Shawnigan Lake Area Director, Bruce Fraser, explained that the CVRD was asking the the B.C. Environment Ministry to suspend SIA’s application and place a moratorium on similar applications until Nov. 30.

“To give us time to do a proper and thorough public consultation on the application.”

The Environment Ministry reportedly denied that request.

The CVRD said it will collect comments from the public at the July 12 meeting. Those will be turned over to the Ministry of Environment.

SIA and the Ministry of Energy and Mines are also scheduled to be at the meeting at the Kerry Park Arena.
