Lightning knocks out power to over 200 in Cowichan

Between 200 and 300 homes in Cowichan were without power after an impressive thunder and lightning storm Tuesday night.

BC Hydro spokesperson Jennifer Young said that is fewer than what can happen during a wind and rain storm.

“A wind storm, you may have a tree down on a line that affects hundreds of thousands of customers, you fix that, and then those customers come back on.”

Young said it can take longer to restore power to homes after a lightning storm.

“With a lightning storm we tend to see smaller pockets of outages, transformers blown, etc., that may affect only a handful of customers."

Over 130 homes on Pender Island were still without power on Wednesday morning.

Young said BC Hydro expected to have power restored to those residents the same afternoon.
