When four-year-old Alexa Middelaer was struck and killed by a drunk driver in Delta B.C., the province erupted in anger.

In response, a special force was created called Alexa's Team to combat impaired driving on B.C. roads.

In Cowichan, five local officers were added to Alexa's Team after they each caught at least 10 impaired drivers in one year.

North Cowichan/Duncan Cst. Ryan Walker, Cst. Chene Mulaire, Cst. Blake Cross, Cst. Laura Duncan and Cst. Kelly Allan took 146 impaired drivers off our roads in 2011.

Cst. Greg Pask said the Cowichan cops have made our roads safer.

“We are thankful of the effort the officers put in, on behalf of the detachment, removing impaired drivers, not only impaired by alcohol but also impaired by drugs….essentially making our roadways safer for everyone to enjoy.”

Since 2008, Alexa's Team has grown from 26 members to 355 officers around the province.
