A few days after Education District 79’s board of trustees was fired, the man appointed to take over their job has arrived in the Cowichan Valley.

Mike McKay is replacing the nine-member board, dismissed on July 1 for presenting a deficit budget to the Education Ministry.

McKay comes from the Surrey School District but used to work in the Cowichan Valley and was the principal at Cowichan Secondary.

Education Minister George Abbott insists the trustees broke provincial laws with their nearly $3.8 million shortfall.

McKay's job will be to find what the now-former board refused: areas to cut to fit the government's budget.
