Groups and individuals in Chemainus are determined to prevent a new library from going up in the parking lot of Waterwheel Park.

With the support of the Chamber of Commerce, a petition is being circulated that "North Cowichan use the old firehall site for a multipurpose building which includes the library."

The groups believe the library would take up too much room in the parking lot of Waterwheel, making it more difficult for visitors to find parking.

North Cowichan council made a unanimous decision in May to put the library there. Mayor Jon Lefebure said using the firehall would take longer and delay the process.

The petition to have the library put in the firehall is being placed at spots around Chemainus, including the Visitors’ Centre.
