The driver of a truck that struck a cyclist on Lane Rd. in Duncan on Thursday morning iis likely not at fault, according to local RCMP.

Cpl. Chris Swain said the truck driver was heading south on Lane Rd. and the cyclist was going east on Moorfield when the accident occurred.

“From what we gather in our investigation so far, the cyclist went through the stop sign without stopping at Lane and Moorfield, crossed traffic on Lane and got hit by the vehicle that had the right-of-way.”

Swain said the RCMP spoke to several witnesses at the scene including the driver, and will continue to investigate.

“We’ve had a re-constructionist go over the scene and physical evidence at the scene, so we’re still investigating and still talking to some people.”

The cyclist, a 20-year-old Duncan resident, was airlifted to Victoria general with serious, life-threatening injuries.

Vancouver Island Health Authority confirmed Thursday evening the cyclist was in critical condition.
