North Cowichan district council will tackle a controversial topic in the coming months, if one councillor gets his way.

John Koury planned to put forward a motion at a July 18 council meeting to suggest the Cowichan Aquatic Centre get rid of the two-tiered fee, which charges some Cowichan Valley residents double the amount others pay to access the facilities.

In his motion, Koury refers to the disparity in fees as a "barrier to increasing access to recreational, skills and social developmental programs for all citizens in the region."

He's calling for the district of North Cowichan to work with other local governments to implement a single fee for the pool by the end of the year.

Some residents living in Duncan/North Cowichan pay a lower rate at the pool, while others living nearby, pay almost double the fee.
