Calling all Cowichan parents, who might want some guidance in discussing drugs and alcohol with your kids.

The Cowichan District Parent Advisory Council is holding a drug awareness night, where parents can get advice from experts.

RCMP Corporal Scott Hilderley from the Drugs and Organized Crime Awareness Service told SunFM News anyone can become a victim of abuse and it starts simply with the choices each kid makes.

“One of the things that I see over and over, and I have been a police officer for 26 years, whenever something tragic happens, when you trace back the history of how that tragedy came to pass, it always comes back to a poor choice.”

Hilderley said the most important thing you can do for your kids, in guiding them to better choices, is to talk about it.

“Quite honestly, the absolute best drug prevention program going on anywhere is just a family sitting around their dinner table talking about things that matter, connecting with their kids.”

Along with Corporal Hilderley, other panelists include an E-R doctor and drug and alcohol abuse counselors.

It runs Tuesday May 7 at Mt. Prevost School from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.
