Cowichan voters may have a new riding to cast their ballots in and new candidates to vote for in the next federal election. The B.C. Electoral Boundaries Commission is suggesting changes that would divide the current Naniamo-Cowichan riding, blending Duncan and the district of North Cowichan with Metchosin and Sooke. The current Member of Parliament, Jean Crowder, said constituents in these areas feel as though they may get left out. “I am surprised that they take us over the Malahat and they divide Colwood,” she explained. “One of the things that they look at is communities of natural affiliations.” “I’ve heard some people expressing some concern… that they’re afraid that the Cowichan end of the riding will get lost in the Colwood, Metchosin, Port Renfrew.“ But the president of the Conservative Riding Association, John Koury, said the proposed riding of South Cowichan-Juan de Fuca makes sense to him. “Metchosin, Sooke, North Cowichan, Duncan, they have a lot more in common than one might think, they’re both coastal communities, they’re small communities and rural communities,” “So they do relate to each other in terms of what challenges and opportunities there are for those communities to grow.” That new riding also means Ladysmith gets divided between two: a revised Nanaimo-Cowichan and Nanaimo-Alberni. The Electoral Boundaries Commission is asked to revisit the voting districts every ten years or so and revise them to reflect changes in population. It aims to have 105,000 people in each riding.
