A member of Vancouver Island’s Ahousaht First Nation, Shawn Atleo, has been re-elected as the chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

Atleo earned 341 votes of 512 cast in a third round of voting at the assembly in Toronto Wednesday to re-take the national leadership.

Atleo defeated Pam Palmater, a Mi'kmaq lawyer and professor at Toronto's Ryerson University. He also defeated former Treaty 3 Grand Chief Diane Kelly and Dene Chief Bill Erasmus on the final ballot.

The AFN chief was in the Cowichan Valley in early April to show support to the Cowichan Tribes, in the wake of several suicide attempts in the community.

The Ahousaht First Nation is on the west side of Vargas Island in Clayoquot Sound.
