An announcement by Education Minister George Abbott has some thinking about a different part of academic life: when students go to classes.

The Superintendent of School District 79, Joe Rhodes, agrees that the September to June schedule is a little outdated.

“That’s an old agrarian model, which was very important when we were an agricultural community, but that is 100 and some odd years old. And maybe we should look at the big gaps that we create in learning aren’t in the best of all kids.”

Rhodes told SunFm News classes should be available for students 12 months a year, and families could choose when they want their kids to go.

He likens it to a university or college system, where semesters are offered and there's more flexibility for families.

The Education Minister wants the traditional school calendar to be revoked starting in 2013.
