Tourism is looking a little brighter in Chemainus this year. This May saw tourist numbers up 40 percent over last year.

Chemainus Chamber of Commerce Coordinator Jeanne Ross told SunFM News they are witnessing more and more traffic.

“Certainly the number of people who’ve come through the visitors’ centre is up significantly. We’ve been seeing more busses in the parking lot at Waterwheel Park. A couple weeks ago there were eight busses at one time on a Monday which is really unusual for May.”

This is great news according to Ross, as past years have been tough.

“Well, tourism has actually been down the last couple of years, so we are hoping it has rebounded, it could also just be the general economy is picking up, it was kind of  bad for a little while there.”

Ross said they're trying to attract more people to the area, so the recent activity is a positive sign toward a busy summer in downtown Chemainus.
