Nearly 100 cyclists swept through the Cowichan Valley on Saturday to support Boomer’s Legacy, a trust fund set up for Canadian Forces stationed overseas to help impoverished villagers.  

Before Andrew “Boomer” Eyekelenboom died at 23 years old, he told his mother he wanted to help people living in poverty and asked her to knit tuques and sweaters. The initiative turned into Boomer Rides held in several places across Canada. According to participant Mike Murphy from Mill Bay, riders on Vancouver Island raised $50,000 in 2011.  

Boomer’s mother, Maureen Eyekelenboom, also participated in Saturday’s event, as riders wore red shirts and stopped in Duncan, then Mill Bay on their way from Comox to Victoria.
