Mothers of murdered women speak
A 24-year-old Duncan man is facing two counts of first-degree murder in relation to the death of Tyeshia Jones, 18, and Karrie Ann Stone, 42.
The fire hall in Duncan was packed Saturday morning as the police announced that William Gordon Robert Elliot is accused of the murders.
It's been nearly two years since Stone was found dead in Glenora. Her mother, Bev Stone, said it's been a long road and she feels some relief the police have someone in custody. She went on to describe her daughter's character.
“Karrie was the type of person, she just forgave everyone, no matter what anybody did to her, she always had a smile on her face. I am sure she would want me over time, sometime down the road, to forgive this man.”
Jones' mother, Mary Jim, is also relieved police have someone in custody.
“I myself want to one day forgive, William, for what he has done and what he has taken from me and my family."
She thanked people in the community for the support they've given her since her daughter was found dead in January 2011. She described the experience as a rollercoaster ride.
"I'll tell you one thing, I let the anger go. And I've been angry, waking up angry and I can't live like that, because I have kids. So I let the anger go and I had a good sleep and woke up smiling."
The Superintendent in charge of the BC RCMP Major Crime Unit, Jim Gresham said, "The threshold for arrest was met late yesterday, and officers moved in on the suspect, taking him into custody without incident."
Stone went missing on July 7, 2010. Her burnt remains were found in a wooded area of Glenora on July 12.
Jones went missing on Jan. 22, 2011. Her body was found in a wooded area near the reserve in Duncan on Jan. 28.
Elliott was set to appear before a Justice of the Peace Saturday, where police will ask for the accused to remain in custody. Elliott is expected to appear in Duncan Provincial Court to face charges early next week.
