Should float homes in Cowichan Bay be limited and should they be hooked up to a sewer system?

Residents in the area seem to have mixed feelings about the issue and down at the docks, one angry resident said, “the ocean is not a septic tank” and “the grey water going into the bay from the float homes is an environmental concern.”

Others said float home owners shouldn't necessarily have to pay to hook up to sewer. “I don’t think these people should be necessarily limited as to what their options are. I think there are much less expensive and perfectly acceptable ways in which the sewage problem can be dealt with.”

One man said he had even read a study that showed the bay was exceptionally clean and didn’t know what all the fuss was about.

One boat owner and business man in Cowichan Bay felt there could be a solution to suit everyone but he was not happy with how things smelled currently. “I can tell ya, when I am out on the waves here, I get a smell that is not natural, that is human sewage in the mud, and at low tide, it stinks, real bad.”

Cowichan Bay Area Director Lori Iannidinardo is determined to have the new float home bylaws written and enforced by the end of 2012. That means, float home owners will have to hook up to sewage or set sail for another bay.
