Duncan celebrated 100 years of history on the weekend but it was a modern event that capped off the festivities and drew the crowd on Sunday.

Some 40 bikers wowed at least 1,500 people in the first-ever Supermoto races held in a B.C. city.

Event organizer Calvin van Elsakker told SunFM News he couldn't have asked for a better turn-out.

“The crowd was huge, everyone was really responsive. We were going off the ramp, we were just flying off the ramp. Everyone was having such a blast doing that.”

Bikers wowed the audience along Canada Ave. and Duncan St. in a series of manoeuvres around curves and over ramps and jumps.

Van Elsakker, also the president of the Victoria Supermoto Association, gave kudos to the city for hosting the event.

“The city of Duncan was so welcoming with open arms,” he said. “I don’t think we could have been more welcomed, anywhere.”

Bikers competed in five categories on Sunday: Ladies, novice, intermediate, expert and expert pro. Van Elsakker said three ladies from Victoria took the top spots in their category while Steve Crevier won the expert pro event.

Victoria Supermoto Association has been around since 2001, and van Elsakker said he's heard there could be more races coming to Duncan in the future.
