The BC Coroners Service has released the names of two people killed in a motorcycle-pedestrian accident Aug. 4 in Lake Cowichan.

The 60-year-old driver of the motorbike is Arthur Barnard from Chemainus, according to the regional coroner for Vancouver Island, Matt Brown.

Brown told SunFM News the 48-year-old woman is Sandra Dempsey from Lake Cowichan, also known as Sandra Engstrom.

Dempsey was walking her dog on Youbou Rd. near Neva Rd. Saturday night when the collision occurred.

A 49-year-old woman from Duncan was on the back of the motorbike and taken to the Cowichan District Hospital in stable condition.

Brown said the coroners’ office did not perform autopsies on the bodies because the cause of death was obvious upon examination—he said they both died from multiple traumatic injuries.

The BC Coroners Service has also ordered toxicology tests, the results of which generally take between four to six weeks. Brown believes alcohol and speed were factors in the accident.
