The body of a man has been found in the Cowichan River.

A fisherman came across the remains Thursday morning south of Spring Pool, off Hudgrove Rd.

RCMP Cpl. Krista Hobday at the Lake Cowichan detachment said the body could only be seen from the water.

“The body was located hung up under some branches that had come out from the shore, along the shore… in a narrow area of the river.”

Hobday said the body was fully clothed and seemed uninjured.

The RCMP are waiting for the results of an autopsy before confirming whether it's the body of William Shearer, a 58-year-old man from Calgary who was visiting family in Lake Cowichan and believed to have fallen into the river last month.

Hobday said they have spoken with his family.

“We’re not assuming it’s Mr. Shearer, but we have notified his family in case it turns out that it is, we wouldn’t want them hearing this on the news, so we did attend his residence to let them know that it may be, but a positive identification is required.”

It’s believed that Shearer fell into the river Apr. 13. Teams looked for two days before calling off the search.
