There are national monuments for the RCMP and the military, but it's taken years for the country to get one for Canadian firefighters.

Wayne Jasper is a director with the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation and has helped create the first national monument for firefighters, to be unveiled in Ottawa in the fall.  

He told SunFM News that the foundation will help a few families in the Cowichan region make it to the nation's capital this fall for the ceremony.

“We provide assistance for these families to attend the monument in Ottawa. We provide ongoing contact and assistance with them, to help them with various aspects of losing a loved one in the fire service to ensure they are not forgotten.”

Since the 1960s, three men have lost their lives while doing their job in the Cowichan Valley: Alan Campbell in Duncan, Bob Evans in Cowichan Bay and Dustin Engels in Sahtlam.

Jasper is organizing a fundraiser at the Arbutus Golf Club Saturday, June 9, to help raise money for families of fallen firefighters

He notes that Saturday's tournament is a best ball format with prizes and a silent auction, open to everyone.
