NewsPoppies to don signs of Duncan, North Cowichan
Poppies will soon pop up on street signs around the district of North Cowichan and the city of Duncan, next to names like St. Julian, Festubert, Vimy, Arnhem and Cambrai. The signs bear the names of WWI and WWI battles in which Canadian soldiers fought, risked or lost their lives. The Royal Canadian Legion, in conjunction with the districts, is unveiling the 55 new poppy street signs to pay tribute to those soldiers. The project was spearheaded by Padre Bill Allen who researched the street names in Duncan and North Cowichan. Former Duncan City Councillor Mike Caljouw then came on board and researched the actual criteria and guidelines that would have to be followed to put a poppy on each street sign. Caljouw never had a chance to see the results of his work. He passed away in late April this year. The president of Branch 53 in Cowichan, Bruce McDonald, recalls Caljouw’s dedication to the initiative. “He was really deeply involved with it and he was thought it was a great idea and it’s too bad he wasn’t still here to see it, but he’s gone and we’re doing the best we can to get all the information… that he had stored up.” The Royal Canadian Legion will officially unveil the poppy signs June 28, as part of Legion Week.
