Lake Cowichan RCMP are investigating how and why a fatal collision on Youbou Rd. killed two people Aug. 4.
A 60-year-old man was heading east on a BMW motorbike and a 48-year-old woman was walking her dog at a clearly marked crosswalk near Neva Rd. when the accident occurred.
Sgt. Dave Voller said it's still too early to say what happened.
“There are a number of questions we still have to answer.”
For one, Voller said a toxicology test should show whether the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. He also expressed some bewilderment at why such as tragic accident happened on a road not known for being dangerous.
“I would describe it as in good shape, good visibility, good sight lines. I’m at a loss as to how this occurred.”
The pedestrian from Lake Cowichan and her dog died at the scene and the motorcyclist died en route to the hospital.
The survivor is a woman from Duncan, 49, who was on the back of the motorcycle and was taken to Cowichan District Hospital in stable condition Saturday night.
The police are not releasing the identities of the deceased at this time.
